She’s on her way back home in the train, when her mobile starts to buzz.
It’s her daughter.
‘Hi mom, where do we keep the little plastic bags?’
‘Well, eh, you’ll find them in the top left drawer, way in the back. There must be a roll of bags in there. Why?’
She hears her daughter opening the drawer and rummaging through the contents.
‘Yes, got them, thanks.’
‘What do you need them for? How was school today?’
‘I don’t have time to talk mom, I just found a dead mouse in the alley and I have to hurry back and get it.’
‘Where did you find it? And are you sure it’s not damaged? You do know how to pick it up, don’t you? First you put your hand inside the bag …’
‘Yeah mom, I know! I pick up the mouse and pull the bag over my hand. And yes, I’ll be sure to wash my hands afterwards! Well, got to run now, bye!’
A few minutes later there’s the buzz again.
‘I’ve got him, the mouse,’ her daughter says. ‘I think it’s a shrew, it’s got the sweetest pointy nose. And he’s whole and perfect and just beautiful, mom. I think he had just died when I found him.’
The little girl happily continues: ‘I’ve shut the bag and put it in the deep freezer, that’s alright, isn’t it? Can we put it on strong water when you get home?’

LOL, it seems that mice are back on the menu! *grins*
I love the enthusiasm and spontaneity of kids. They don’t think about germs and bacteria when they pick something up, they just go ahead and do it.
My niece used to carry around worms and crawling insects in her hands, proudly showing them to us. She was fascinated by them, just like your daughter is by this little cute pointy-nosed mouse. 🙂
Hi Sweet M, thanks for your comment!
That’s a lovely niece you have, I guess most kids have a great interest in nature. It is a pity if they (we) lose that along the way.
And even in these modern times, when nature seems to backed out of our lives entirely, you can still find the beauty of The Wild in little encounters like these. Even when it concerns a dead animal.

Indeed. Let’s never lose the connection to The Wild, because out there the most unexpected peace and beauty can be found. A counter balance to the stress in our (too) busy lives.
*hugs*
